Nigeria: Soldiers Missing As Insurgents Overwhelm Borno Army Installations
Several soldiers and few officers reportedly ‘went missing’ on Friday after insurgents overwhelmed 153 Infantry Battalion and the 22 Armored Brigade, Marte, Borno State in a surprise attack.
Both army formations were in one base when the insurgents launched an assault on them. Troops were said to have withdrawn from their positions when they were overpowered.
“Troops tried very hard and almost suppressed the offensive but the insurgents sent reinforcements. Troops could not withstand the superior firepower of the insurgents and had to abandon their positions,” a military source confirmed on Saturday.
Most of the soldiers and officers sought refuge in Dikwa town which had army base while many others have not been accounted for, the source added.
The insurgents were said to have looted valuables including large caliber guns before setting the army installations ablaze.
The Brigade Commander and the Commanding Officer of the battalion were among the troops that retreated to Dikwa where the General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, was supposed to meet with them on Saturday, the source stated.

SaharaReporters gathered that the policemen were on transit from Minna in Niger State to Kano State when they were attacked on Friday.
Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) Chairman, Barrister Salisu Haruna, confirmed the attack in a statement.
The 18 police officers, who are on surveillance along Birnin Gwari Funtua road, were attacked on Friday. As at the time of filing this report, we could not ascertain the number of casualties. Eyewitness feared that some of the police officers were killed while others are said to be missing in the bush.

LÍDER DE “PUN” REPUDIA AUMENTO DE IMPOSTOS APROVADOS PELOS DEPUTADOS
O Partido da Unidade Nacional (PUN) repudia o aumento dos impostos aprovados pelos deputados da nação, por considerar que a Guiné-Bissau vive um momento de grandes dificuldades económicas, acrescidas pela pandemia do novo coronavírus (covid-19), sem contrapartidas para a melhoria das condições de vida da população.
Em uma nota na sua página oficial no Facebook, para solidarizar-se com a manifestação convocada, este sábado, 16 de janeiro de 2021, pela União Nacional dos Trabalhadores da Guiné – Central sindical (UNTG – SC), e impedida pelas forças de segurança, o partido liderado por Idrissa Djalo manifesta a sua incondicional solidariedade aos trabalhadores e á população da Guiné-Bissau.
Para PUN, o combate por uma sociedade mais justa e igualitária só terá sucesso com a mobilização e participação de todos.
“Assistimos à aprovação de medidas discriminatórias pelo poder vigente, lesivas do interesse e bem estar geral” lê-se, condenando o “aumento imoral de subsídios e benefícios financeiros” para um pequeno número de cidadãos, que deveria servir o País e não servir-se dele.
“A união sempre fez a força face as arbitrariedades e injustiças” concluiu.
De referir que o Grupo de 18 Partidos Políticos sem assento parlamentar considera “constrangedor” o Orçamento Geral do Estado (OGE) para ano económico 2021 que aguarda promulgação pelo chefe de Estado e pediu veto de Umaro Sissoco Embaló contra o documento.
Em conferência de imprensa realizada na quinta-feira 14 de janeiro, Ibraima Djaló, porta-voz do grupo frisou que o OGE de 2021 não contempla medidas corretivas e apoio ao sector produtivo resultantes dos prejuízos causados pela pandemia. Ao contrário, criou-se um fundo financeiro denominado Fundo de soberania, sem ter em conta a situação económica que o país atravessa e nem a do déficit orçamental coberto com o apoio externo, ou seja, pelos impostos de cidadãos de outros países.

MALAM SABALI REELEITO PARA DIRIGIR ORGANIZAÇÃO VOLUNTÁRIA DE MÉDICOS
O cirurgião, Malam Sabali, foi reeleito presidente da Assistência Médica Voluntário (AMEV) na segunda Assembleia Geral constituinte com 45 votos a favor, 02 contra e 01 nulo, no universo de 47 associados que participaram naquela reunião que decorreu no anfiteatro da Universidade Lusófona da Guiné, em Bissau.
Após divulgação dos resultados, Malam Sabali disse que nos próximos quatro anos continuará a trabalhar com os associados para ajudar a camada mais favorecido em termos de acesso à saúde.
O responsável de AMEV informou que um dos objetivos daquela organização é incentivar o trabalho voluntário dos técnicos que trabalham na área de saúde para ajudar a camada mais vulnerável da sociedade. Malam contou que iniciaram com o número reduzido das pessoas, mas atualmente a organização tem muita adesão de voluntários.
“Durante quatro anos do mandato, assistimos mais de 9 mil pessoas a nível nacional, consultando e oferecendo medicamentos gratuitos. Fomos a Boé, Cassacá, Ilhas, Cuntima. Pretendemos prosseguir com essa actividade”, garantiu.
Questionado sobre situação atual de saúde no país, Malam disse que não é nada boa, desde o sistema que não está bem estruturada. Contudo, reconheceu por toda parte do mundo a saúde é cara, mas que é preciso investir seriamente na área de saúde incluindo os seus recursos humanos para fazer face às demandas.
Malam Sabali informou que a organização que dirige recebe apoios de medicamentos, meios de transporte e logística por parte da ONG AIDA e ONG Tabanca para deslocar-se ao interior do país. Além de saúde, AMEV intervém no domínios de água e saneamento, nutrição e segurança alimentar.

SINJOTECS QUALIFICA “UM ATENTADO” À LIBERDADE DE IMPRENSA A SUSPENSÃO DO JORNALISTA DA TGB
O Sindicato dos Jornalistas e Técnicos da Comunicação Social da Guiné Bissau (SINJOTECS) considera “um atentado” à livre exercício do jornalismo a suspensão do jornalista da Televisão da Guiné Bissau, Baducaram Imbenque.
Em comunicado distribuído à imprensa e às organizações regionais e internacionais de jornalistas a que o jornal O Democrata teve acesso, datado de 15 de janeiro de 2021, o SINJOTECS diz ter auscultado tanto a direção da televisão quanto ao jornalista em causa, para um esclarecimento factual do ocorrido.
O jornalista Baducaram Imbenque foi suspenso na semana passada pelo diretor daquela única estação de televisão do país, Amadu Djamanca, por supostamente não ter dado um “tratamento adequado” ao torneio de unidade nacional entre os órgãos de soberania.
O SINJOTECS considera “precipitada e emotiva” a decisão de suspender “sem culpa formada e nem a observância de autodefesa por parte da vítima”, Baducaram Imbenque.
A organização qualifica a decisão como “infeliz” e que a mesma é carregada de postura ” autoritária e abuso de poder”, exortando o Diretor da TGB a pautar pelo cumprimento da sua missão em “observância às leis da República, sobretudo à Constituição e à lei de imprensa”, e incentivar o rigor e profissionalismo no tratamento de acontecimentos na televisão nacional.
Neste sentido, o SINJOTECS exige o levantamento imediato da “inapropriada suspensão” para que o jornalista em causa regresse ao trabalho.
Para além de sugerir que o secretário de Estado de comunicação social, Conco Tureé, acompanhe com “mais cuidado e zelo” o funcionamento da TGB e os restantes órgãos públicos de comunicação social, o SINJOTECS exorta o Presidente da República, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, e o primeiro ministro, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, a estarem atentos aos “abusos e às injustiças” sociais que se praticam contra os jornalistas de órgãos públicos.

Military Parade Commemorates 8th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea
Pyongyang, January 15 (KCNA) -- There took place a splendid military parade at Kim Il Sung Square here in the evening on January 14 to commemorate the 8th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK).
The band of the State Affairs Commission (SAC) and the central military band of the Ministry of Defence took the peculiarly-decorated bandstand to play parade music.
Parade columns entered the square with the pride and honor.
Columns of mechanized units which would demonstrate the inexhaustible might of the armed forces of the Republic were on standby on the avenues leading to the square.
Air squadrons for the parade were waiting for order of sorties.
Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the WPK, chairman of the SAC of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and supreme commander of the armed forces of the DPRK, appeared at the tribune of the square. He warmly waved back to the enthusiastically cheering paraders and masses.
Children presented fragrant flowers to him and leading officials of the Party, the government and the military.
Amid the playing of the song "The Glorious Country", a salute of 21 guns boomed.
The parade began led by the command car with Marshal Pak Jong Chon on, amid the play of dynamic march music.
The columns of the first and the second corps marched past with dignity, demonstrating their pride as the eldest corps and the unit where the a-match-for-a-hundred spirit was born.
Making powerful strides toward the square were columns of the navy and the air and anti-air force.
The masses warmly applauded the column of the strategic force.
Then there was flight, paying respect to the great Party Central Committee.
Following the formation of guard planes, the red hawks of the Party, in the pattern of the Party emblem, flew past the sky above the square letting off the fireworks to brighten the sky.
The columns of mechanized units began their procession led by the column of armored vehicles.
The column of prototype tanks roared past the square, which was followed by those of ultra-modern tactical rockets.
This was followed by the procession of the ultra-modern self-propelled artillery pieces, grandly showing off the might of our artillery force.
The columns of rockets possessed of powerful striking capability for thoroughly annihilating enemies in a preemptive way outside the territory, roared past.
The world's most powerful weapon, submarine-launch ballistic missile, entered the square one after another, powerfully demonstrating the might of the revolutionary armed forces.
The people raised cheers as it demonstrated the tremendous might of our Party which accomplished the great cause of building a wealthy country with a powerful army.
